i am sure that every estonian thinks every day about how to help ukraine, and not only thinks, but also actively acts, contributing to your struggle. and that is great, thank you for that, as i know, about a year ago estonian legislators adopted a law that allows... what has been achieved in this direction over the past year? estonia was one of the first countries to adopt a law that allows the confiscation of frozen russian assets. we have become leaders in this matter, because we believe that it is necessary to use not only the interest, but also the assets themselves for the benefit of those affected by russian aggression.
4:01 pm
of course, legislative processes take time. the law has been adopted by the parliament, and now the relevant estonian authorities are carrying out the necessary procedures for its implementation. i don't know if it's fortunate or not, but we don't have many russian assets on the territory of the country. after all, we have been cautious about this issue for the past 20 years, but those assets that are there are important, because this law sets a precedent. it shows our european colleagues that that such measures are possible and confirms that european union law allows this type of confiscation.
4:02 pm
we hope that as many countries as possible will follow our example, increasing pressure on the aggressor and upholding justice. but will they follow you? yes, of course, we maintain close contact with colleagues from other european union countries, as they are also interested in learning from our experience, how exactly we implemented this process and were able to. appropriate law. i sincerely hope and remain optimistic that more and more countries will follow our example. i have one more question regarding the adoption of this law. did the process go smoothly, were there any obstacles? no, everything went smoothly. the estonian parliament, as the voice of the people, firmly supports ukraine. the deputies understand perfectly well what...
4:03 pm
is at stake, so the process of adopting the law in our parliament took place without any obstacles. of course, my next question concerns the future after the end of the war. after victory , a large-scale reconstruction of ukraine will begin. this brutal war left significant destruction, and the country will need great efforts to rebuild. as far as i know, estonia plans to actively participate in these. yes, of course, we started rebuilding ukraine during the war. estonia became the first country to start this work in 2022, because we believe that we should not wait for the end of the war. reconstruction and reconstruction should take place immediately. we have chosen the zhytomyr region for support, where we have already built a kindergarten, a bridge and implemented a number of other important ones.
4:04 pm
of course, we will continue this work after the war is over, because we understand that the needs will be even greater then. many ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes due to the destruction and are now in europe are eager to return home. this means that they will need housing, kindergartens, schools and other infrastructure. "we are firmly committed to continuing to support and rebuild ukraine after the war, and we sincerely hope that this day will come very soon. do i understand correctly that this cooperation, in particular in the field of reconstruction, will not be limited to the zhytomyr region?
4:05 pm
cooperation is not limited to the zhytomyr region, but our approach to reconstruction and development goes far beyond the construction of kindergartens. or other facilities, we focus on comprehensive solutions, such as teacher training, organizing summer camps for children in estonia and integrating each project into an annual or continuous process. although we are actively helping other regions where urgent support is needed to achieve sustainable and long-term development, we direct our main efforts specifically to the zhytomyr region, is estonian business interested in investing in ukraine now and after the war.
4:06 pm
currently, the situation is complicated by the ongoing war and brutal attacks from russia, but the interest of estonian companies in investing in ukraine remains high. it is worth noting that before the start of the full-scale war, many estonian companies were already successfully operating in ukraine. unfortunately, some of them had production facilities in regions that are now under russian control. occupation, despite these difficulties, interest in ukraine remains high. another important area of support from estonia is providing asylum to ukrainian citizens who were forced to flee
4:07 pm
the war in february 2022. can you share statistics on how many ukrainians are currently in estonia under your protection? currently, there are almost 40,000 ukrainians living in estonia, judging by what i read in estonian newspapers and see in the media, they have integrated well and are generally satisfied with their lives here. at the same time, of course, they remain very concerned about the situation in ukraine and worry about their loved ones. we have also built two schools for ukrainian children to provide them with the opportunity to receive an education and adapt more easily to new conditions. two schools? yes, in one of the schools children have the opportunity to study according to the ukrainian curriculum
4:08 pm
in parallel with the estonian one. we believe that preserving the language and culture is extremely important. i hope that ukrainians feel at home in estonia, as much as is possible under such circumstances? i am sure they think so too. okay, let's move on to another question. i sincerely hope that in a few years ukraine will join the european union as a full member. however, before that, important steps need to be taken, a number of internal issues need to be resolved, and necessary reforms need to be introduced. as the ambassador of the republic of estonia to ukraine, who lives and works here, what is your view on what ukraine has already achieved? and what further steps need to be taken to join the european
4:09 pm
union? on what, in your opinion, should we focus our efforts? i could spend hours answering this question. because these are not just a few steps, they are a whole set of measures that a country must take to join the european union. most of them are technical, but they also involve numerous changes to the legislation. in estonia, the process of joining the european union lasted almost seven years. for ukraine, the situation is complicated by the war and the financial difficulties associated with it, but what i see gives rise to great optimism. the ukrainian parliament is very quickly adopting the necessary reforms and
4:10 pm
laws. i am sure that ukraine will be able to become a member of the european union faster than we managed to do. however. there is still a lot of work ahead. every area must be brought into line with eu norms and standards. most eu countries have chosen one or two areas in which they offer their support to ukraine. moreover, you already have many allies within the european union who are helping you prepare for this important process. i understand who you are talking about, and i fully
4:11 pm
i agree that we have many friends outside ukraine who are actively helping us get closer to eu membership. at the same time, i realize that without doing our homework here in ukraine, this will be impossible. as a citizen of ukraine, i believe that corruption remains one of the key obstacles on the way to eu accession, based on your experience when estonia was working on joining the european union, what advice would you give us to overcome this problem and successfully go through this difficult path? i want to note that the supremacy rights, the protection of fundamental rights and an effective anti-corruption policy are key issues that are important all over the world, not only for ukraine. every country that seeks to join the european union must meet
4:12 pm
these standards and implement the necessary regulations. my advice is to maintain a very close dialogue with the european union and its representatives in order to have a clear understanding of what specific reforms are needed and what regulations need to be adopted. cooperation will also be extremely useful with countries that have recently gone this way. for example, with estonia or other baltic countries, their experience can be invaluable. when i see olga stefanyshyna, her team and their perseverance, i have no doubt that ukraine will overcome all challenges. the main thing is to adhere to the established rules and fulfill the requirements. everything else will definitely come with time. by the way, what was the main problem for... estonia before it was accepted into the european union.
4:13 pm
we did not face serious problems, although, of course, there were certain challenges associated with issues of national minorities and their rights. at that time, we had a very competent chief negotiator, and thanks to his professionalism, as well as the hard work of the team, we managed to overcome these difficulties. there were no significant problems in any specific area that would have become a serious obstacle. you have already mentioned national minorities. are russians considered a national minority in estonia? no, we have other peoples who are considered national minorities. we have belarusians and many other nationalities living in estonia. and...
4:14 pm
speaking of russians, from the words of my daughter, who now lives in estonia, i understood that many russian-speaking estonians do not want to integrate into estonian society, learn estonian or, as they might put it, become estonians, is that really the case? of course, among russian-speaking estonians there are still those who do not want to learn estonian or obtain estonian citizenship. however, there are much fewer such people than 30 or even 20 years ago. at the same time, no one can force someone to acquire citizenship of a certain country.
4:15 pm
this is a personal decision for each person. many of them have the status of permanent residents with a european union residence permit, which allows them to travel freely between russia and the eu member states. it is worth noting that the younger generation is increasingly aware of the importance of learning estonian for a quality education and prospects. they are actively integrating into estonian society, which indicates positive changes. i sincerely hope that they will integrate. my next question concerns prospects future cooperation between ukraine and the republic of estonia.
4:16 pm
what key industries can become the basis for our partnership? i can name many sectors, but the first one is definitely the defense sector. estonian and ukrainian defense companies are already demonstrating a high level of cooperation. estonia understands well that ukraine is currently in active combat conditions and has invaluable experience and information from the front in real time. many estonian companies are testing their products in cooperation with... ukrainian partners, the defense sector will undoubtedly be the area that will experience significant development in the near future. the second important area is the digital and cyber sector. estonia and ukraine are among the most digitally advanced countries in the world. in this area, estonia also has something to learn
4:17 pm
from ukraine, which has demonstrated impressive achievements. estonia is ready to share its experience in implementing digital innovations. as a small country, estonia has the advantage of speed of adaptation and implementation new technologies. in my opinion, these two areas, the defense sector and digital cyber technologies, will be key in the cooperation between our countries, both in the short term and after the war. so, you not only intend to help us, but you also expect us to help you in certain areas. thank you very much, my last question concerns the incident that happened about a month ago, unfortunately, the wreckage of a russian military drone fell on your house. i hope no one was injured and everything is over. how did
4:18 pm
your colleagues in diplomatic circles react to this incident? yes, unfortunately, the house where i live was hit by a russian drone. i was at home at that moment. at first , my husband and i were in a shelter, and it was one of those nights when the air raid could last four, five or even six hours. due to poor communication in the shelter, we were unable to receive up-to-date information. so, when we saw that the air raid was over, we decided to return to the apartment, and that's when it happened. were you in the apartment at that time? yes, we were in the apartment, but we immediately decided to leave. i would like to take this opportunity to thank the rescuers
4:19 pm
and police officers. who immediately arrived at our house, i am sincerely grateful to everyone for their prompt assistance and support, special thanks to my colleagues at the embassy and in the estonian ministries, who were sincerely worried about us. fortunately, everything was fine with us. this experience only strengthened our determination. to help ukraine, we personally felt what they are going through ukrainians every day. how drones fly near houses, even in a big city like kyiv. we recognize them by the sound, and now we know what it's like when a drone hits your house, it fills us with even greater determination
4:20 pm
to act and support you. this ordeal helped me better understand what ukrainians go through every day. fortunately , no one in our house was hurt, but we constantly read in the news about how peaceful ukrainian residents die during such attacks. i hope that by sharing my experience, we will be able to convey. to the world that this war is real, it is going on in big cities, small towns and villages, and russia deliberately. chooses the civilian population as its target. i am used to calling a spade a spade, so this is genocide and a war crime.
4:21 pm
once again i want to thank my colleagues in ukraine and estonia for their support. this ordeal has become an additional incentive for me to make even more efforts to help ukraine. yes, and we are deeply grateful to you for your work here in ukraine. once again we express our sincere gratitude to the estonian people for the help and support we receive every day. thank you very much for joining me today and answering my questions. thank you, thank you very much for the invitation. well, we have to end here due to lack of time. today i had the ambassador of the republic of estonia to ukraine, anneli kolk, as a guest, and they talked a lot about help. we receive, continue to receive from estonia the support we see not only from their government, but also from ordinary people, and the possibility of further cooperation after

espresso. friends, my greetings, we'll talk today once again about colonization and decolonization, although you know, some researchers who have been stewing in this topic for a long time, not only at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, but also before, say that it's enough to talk about this decolonization, but it seems to me that after all, in professional circles, this topic has indeed been discussed dozens of hundreds of times, but in general it... this problem is far from being solved, and we have to return to it again and again, and let's talk about the video that was released on youtube, which is called mine
4:26 pm
colonization is wonderful, it will tell: it gives about how the russians occupied our show business and television, in particular, it began in the 2000s, because until the 2000s there was every chance to completely break away from russian show business, because our show business was developing quite well, as was television, but then, as they say, something went wrong, but now let's talk about what happened in our culture, the biggest, most significant... actions, i really liked them, because now the results of the year and there are a lot of different awards, winners are announced in different lists, and just the other day the bbc book of the year, the winners of this award were announced, traditionally there are three categories, in the main book of the year the winner was grasya oliyko with, oh, i'm sorry, it's a children's book, and yulia
4:27 pm
ilyukha with the book... my women became the winner, now we can look at the cover of this book, if you see it in bookshops, you know that this is the best book for the bbc book of the year version, the author writes in the preface that my women, i quote, speak in everyday language and it's scary, my women share pain and sorrow, my women believe and wait, my women hold on, even though they don't get out, well, here we understand that in the heroines of the book, my women can... see us with you, not only women, probably, but men too, because you know, we all somehow don't get out very much, but we try to do it. as for the children's book, it's not any, it's not fiction, that's what the book by gracia oligo is called, now we can even look at a few illustrations, we can look, the thing is that gracia, she's an illustrator who works for foreign publications, she is quite famous, and
4:28 pm
she... came up with these fairy tales for her daughter, and this is a very cool, you know, way of writing fairy tales if you write them for your child, because you are no longer just a writer who thinks that these texts that you write will be liked by children, you see in practice that they will be liked, and again, as practice shows, if some fairy tales, some stories are liked by one child, then they will most likely be liked by many others, and well... you should definitely buy, i think, read the book with the long title, everything is clear, serhiy kuzminsky and the gadyukin brothers, this is the winner in the essayist nomination, the author yuriy rokytsky, whom we know from participating in the band mertvyi piven, who also deserves to be described in some book, but yuriy described his colleagues from
4:29 pm
the gadyukin brothers, but well... this is a book about serhiy kuzminsky. well, i think it will be interesting to reread all these books. if you haven't read the previous winner of the bbc book of the year, in this main nomination of the book of the year, then this evgeniya kuznyatsova, and her book "the ladder", i think that this is one of those books that has a very wide audience, evgeniya kuznyatsova, in general, in principle, she is famous for such easy writing of her texts, both on facebook and in the books themselves, she has very bright characters, and it is very interesting to watch them, their antics, she also has a wonderful sense of humor, so i think that these books and the ladder and ask miechka, this is the previous book, just what is needed in our conditions, because it is a book that gives hope, which gives a kind of good mood, and which can at the same time distract from all these events, but
4:30 pm
also, no, not... transport you to some kind of world of illusions and still leave you here in our context, but with the aim of making it easier for you for a while, and also the megogo award announced the winners, it happened in a more pompous atmosphere, which belongs to music awards, now we can see, and this was, you know, a more intimate event than, for example, the muzvar award, which also took place a few... ago, literally now, because that the award was held at the ukraina palace, and to be honest, all these ceremonies, whether musical or cinematic, are still quite boring and quite official. i don't know if the organizers don't want to move away from this soviet-style presentation, but if we're talking about the mega music awards, this award stands out because...
